Anyone receiving government assistance who is under retirement age would be required to undergo a yearly audit. Public funds spent on alcohol, tobacco, drugs, luxury items or restaurants would receive one strike. Three strikes means a loss of all benefits.

Anyone receiving government assistance who has no children would see their benefits cut in half. Half of the amount cut would go towards people with children, the other half would be used to provide free public transportation for those on government assistance.

No government assistance can be used at convenience stores or restaurants.

Government assistance can only be used to purchase generic foods and medicines.

Those were great ideas. One thing I would like to add is help for people with children who work and are still poor.

^That's a good addition.

I was thinking about Snob Goblin talking about his room mate blowing money on albums. That prompted this thread.

Immigrants work harder than a lot of Americans, they just need amnesty.

Matt, I was under the impression you were a hardcore lefty. This sounds like it's coming right out of Sean Hannity's mouth. Aside from the immigrant stuff. Haha.

Anyway, I agree that they should monitor how you're spending the money. If you are spending on bullshit, then there should be consequences.

I wonder how feasible it would be to couple benefits with some sort of job training or education program. As in, you can go in to acquire skills necessary for employment in some fields and in return you get a boost in your benefits from the government.

A special "credit card" that can only be used to buy food or other legit products, in Canada for example you can't walk a grocery store and buy booze so it would be easy to just not allow the card to work at liquor stores. Its not perfect I understand the money they get that isn't used on food could go to liquor but its a start. Perhaps you need to have a special bank account so they can see where the moneys going if you opt to take wel-fare, that parts a fine line though I'n not sure about how that would operate without being too intrusive.

It's the government's money. They are giving to someone and trusting them to use it responsibly to support themselves. I think a little oversight is perfectly reasonable. This country is broke and we can't keep propping up the inexcusably unproductive at this time, especially if they are spending their dole on crap.

To add to Matt's question, I'd like to ask - what do you think are valid reasons for not having to work; assuming that you have four working limbs and are of relatively sound intelligence?

I ask because I also think part of the problem lies with what we consider to be "disabled." My room mate has autism, and a few physical issues, but he's had jobs before.

"Matt, I was under the impression you were a hardcore lefty."

I am a Democrat. I am not hardcore anything. On the political spectrum I'm on the left, but not the extreme left.

Extreme lefties don't like me and the feeling is mutual.

"Perhaps you need to have a special bank account so they can see where the moneys going if you opt to take wel-fare, that parts a fine line though I'n not sure about how that would operate without being too intrusive."

If you are receiving government assistance you have given up your right to a non intrusive government.

My boss is intrusive. Why? Because she pays me.

I see no reason why people existing on the government dole should have any special rights to privacy.
