Are you supposed to vote for what you think is best for yourself, or what you think is best for everyone?

Within the type of society we maintain, the best for everyone ends up being the best for yourself.

Enlightened self interest is better than just self interest.

But if I'm a rich guy, what's best for everyone is to have me get taxed more, and that doesn't seem to be in my best interest.

It depends on how enlightened your self interest is.

If the rich guy is not taxed, the civic infrastructure will not exist to spare him from the wrath of an angry impoverished mob.

So I want to get taxed only just enough to keep the impoverished mob from revolting. That still doesn't sound like what's best for everyone.

That's why we have the IRS.

Is it just me, or do a lot of people seem to be voting for what's best for them instead of what's best for everyone?

Depends on what you want to do.

Happy with status quo and want to help? Make altruistic choices.
Happy with status quo and want more for yourself? Make egoistic choices.
Unhappy with status quo and don't give a fuck / think online movements will change something? Make egoistic choices / none at all.
Unhappy with status quo and want to try something new? Make egoistic choices and then put your power to good use.

RandroidJesus is overstrained.

@topic: I'm altruistic in an egoistic sense; living in a bigger house doesn't make me any happier, yet working on something that could benefit as many people as possible does, so that's what I do.

Society is selfish enough, we don't need to promote it as a virtue.

I had this image, but I lost it, where a guy just gave blood, and it had three kids, one saying "Altruism!" and it then said "The Young Libertarians fled in terror."

@CJ,

Enlightened self interest is okay in my books.

It isn't that I don't care about other people, because I do. But its more complex than just "I want to help people."

Okay, if you reject objectivism and altruism, what do you have as the.. I guess, "alternative" thing?

By alternative, I just mean different.

My ethics are pretty standard for any civilized human being I would imagine, perhaps a bit more so. My conscience is somewhat overdeveloped.

I act like an asshat here because its a release from that. In Realworldistan I'm the kindest person you can imagine.

Likewise. It feels good to be an asshole on the internet. Ah, the deliciousness of anonymity.

Although, I try to be nice when I can online, but it's subject to my whims, unlike the real world, where I'm nice 24/7. (monologue and irrelevant here, but whatever)

How is your conscience overdeveloped?
