The media and most viewers of the Oct. 19 Delaware Senate debate thought Republican Christine O'Donnell's question about the First Amendment directed at Democrat Chris Coons was a pretty epic gaffe for the hardcore tea party favorite and Constitution proponent.

O'Donnell did not see it that way, however.

"It's really funny the way that the media reports things," O'Donnell told ABC News this morning. "After that debate my team and I we were literally high fiving each other thinking that we had exposed he doesn't know the First Amendment, and then when we read the reports that said the opposite we were all like 'what?'"

As a refresher, here's how we reported the moment at the Oct. 19 debate:

"You're telling me that's in the First Amendment?" O'Donnell asked, when Coons brought up the fact that the very First Amendment to the Constitution "bars Congress from making laws respecting the establishment of religion."

O'Donnell told ABC News "her line of questioning to Coons was not because she didn't know the First Amendment, but to the make the point the phrase 'separation of church and state' does not appear anywhere in the Constitution." (As ABC's Jon Karl and Gregory Simmons point out in their report, "the Supreme Court has interpreted the First Amendment's declaration that Congress 'shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion' as a legal separation between government and faith.")

"I asked him where in the Constitution is the phrase 'separation of church and state,'" O'Donnell explained. "He said the First Amendment. I followed up with, 'Can you name the five freedoms that are guaranteed to us that are protected by the First Amendment?' And he could not."

That's also why she seemed surprised to hear Coons say that the government cannot make law in respect to establishing religion.

Right. Fucking idiot doing a terrible job of covering up her idiocy.

Why are people supporting O'Donnell on this matter? WHO CARES IF IT SAYS SEPARATION OF CHURCH? THAT'S NOT THE ISSUE. Even if you concede and agree with the narrow interpretation that the 1st amendment is only dealing with establishment of religion, she's still not fit for this position.

Here's the clincher: she didn't know what the 14th, 16th, 17th are and what the 1st amendment says! Anyone who does not know the constitution front and back should not be a senator.

Am I wrong?

"WHO CARES IF IT SAYS SEPARATION OF CHURCH? THAT'S NOT THE ISSUE."

They think the lack of that particular phrase means O'Donnell was right.

These are people who simply don't understand context and never will.

I think it's important to know what the constitution says before you criticize it. How can somebody be a senator without knowing what it says? It boggles my mind.

IT'S SO SHORT.

I don't think she has any intentions of winning this election, this is not the first time she has run for public office. The political and media climate right now is, unfortunately, ripe for seeking attention by saying crazy wingnut shit.

I think she's a media whore grifter following the Sarah Palin path to success.

I see her as more genuine as Palin, though. Palin seems to like the spotlight, whereas O'Donnell seems to want actual change.

Ehhh, there's enough information floating around about her previous election bids to cast some serious doubt on that.

Either way, she could die tomorrow and America's IQ would increase.

I hadn't noticed that...

Either way, I think both have their positives. It's a tough call. There's a greater chance of Christine having STDs, though.
